Pack A "Moving Supply Box" Separately To Make Sure Your Move Goes Smoothly

Posted on

It's one of the most annoying challenges of moving. You go to complete a task, and realize the items you need to complete it have already been packed away. You're forced to either unpack several boxes and look for them or buy new items at the store. Thankfully, you can minimize the number of times this occurs by packing a "moving supply box" with these essential items that you're likely to need on moving day.

Basic Toiletry Items

You're probably going to want to freshen up once or twice between all of that heavy moving and lifting. Having basic grooming supplies ready when you reach your new place can also come in handy and save you some unpacking the first night. Items you'll want include:

  • Toothpaste and a toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • A brush or comb
  • Handsoap
  • Body wash or soap
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • A small, easily packable towel and washcloth

Essential Office Supplies

There's always that last-minute box that needs a label, or that one that comes untaped as you put it in the truck. Make sure your box contains:

  • Several markers (in case one wears out)
  • A tough pair of scissors or a pen knife
  • Packing tape
  • Plain masking tape
  • A ball-point pen and a pencil
  • All-purpose glue

All-Purpose Cleaners

Sometimes you don't discover dirt in your old place until it's empty. You'll need to clean it up if you want to receive your security deposit back. You don't need a full cleaning kit for these last-minute cleanups; the following should handle most jobs:

  • An all-purpose spray cleaner
  • Scouring powder or baking soda
  • A few sponges or rags
  • White shoe polish (for those inevitable scuff marks on baseboards)

Emergency and Self-Care Supplies

Moving is mentally and physically tough. You might want a little rejuvenation, or even require a little rescuing, in the process. The following supplies will help:

  • A basic first-aid kit with bandages, antibiotic ointment, and an ice pack
  • Basic medications: allergy pills, pain relievers, and nausea tablets
  • A candy bar or two to restore your mental stamina
  • Your doctors' names and phone numbers

It's good to organize the items above into several separate smaller containers, based on purpose, and then place the smaller containers in one large box. This will make it easier to find exactly what you need when you need it on moving day. Keep a list of other items you wish you had in your moving supply box as you go. The next time you move, you can create an even more effective box with items on your personalized list.
